When Did You Last See Your Father?

when_did_you_last_see_your_father

Rating:  B

A son examines his relationship with his father.  The father is dying.

I liked this. It was definitely not lighthearted and if someone you were close to has passed away recently you probably don’t want to watch this.  Colin Firth and Jim Broadbent were great (as usual).

Mamma Mia!

Rating:  B-

Premise:  A young girl is about to get married and invites the three men that could possibly be her father.  Her mom freaks out.

Recommend:  Yes, although if you miss seeing it in the theater and have to rent it – you won’t be missing anything.  Like all movie musicals, this is a little over the top.  Meryl Streep is great as are the men (who all have fairly terrible singing voices) but everything else seems a little forced.  Like “look at how much fun we are having”.  The ending seems a little rushed and pieced together.  Stay through the beginning of the credits.

The Turn of the Screw

IMDb.com

Grade:  B

Premise:  Adaptation of a Henry James novel.  A governess is sent to a country estate to take care of the master's charges.  The young charges happen to be possessed by ghosts.  Maybe.

Recommend?:  Possibly.  This is a Colin Firth rental and he was great for the 10 minutes he was in it.  Jodhi May was great but the story just didn't resonate with me.  Not terrible or anything, just not my thing.

Valmont

Rating: B

Premise: An interpretation of Dangerous Liaisons. Colin Firth and Annette Bening make a bet regarding the virtue of a young lady with unexpected results.

Recommend: Yes, especially for Colin Firth fans. It's a good story and the costumes are very cool. CF looks very very good with his long hair.

Apartment Zero

Grade: F

Premise: An about to be insane guy has to let out a room in his flat to another. He suspects that the other guy may be a murderer. He suspects correctly. Then it gets strange.

Recommend?:No. I can't get back the 2 hours I spent watching this. I only watched it because Colin Firth was in it - he didn't suck but the rest of the movie certainly did. It is a stretch to watch...even for CF. There are some unintentionally comedic moments in it towards the end.

Where the Truth Lies

Grade: C

Premise: A young reporter wants to get to the truth behind why a entertainment duo broke up.

Recommend?: Eh, probably not. I know, this is a Colin Firth flick and he did look pretty adorable in it, but it was not a great movie. I really didn't like Alison Lohman in her role - she seemed too young. Kevin Bacon and Colin were good.

Nanny McPhee

Grade: A

Premise: Based on the "Nurse Mathilda" books; a magical nanny comes into the lives of 7 rotten kids.

Recommend?:Yes, definitely. I thought it was great. However, my husband thought it was awful. Maybe for chicks and kids only? Of course, Colin Firth is in it so I will purchase it. I thought the movie was charming. There are some very over-the-top scenes in it. Just sit back and enjoy.

The English Patient

Grade: A-

Premise: A burned guy tells the story of his true love through flashbacks.

I resisted this movie when it came out and after it won all it's academy awards...Mostly due to that Seinfeld episode where Elaine just hates it and is forced to watch by J. Peterman...(hysterical! Love Seinfeld) However, I learned a month or so ago that Colin Firth is in it. So it had to be watched. It is a bit long but not boring at all... I'm giving it an A- because it deserves to be purchased but there's hardly any 3 hour movies that I need to watch more than once besides the Sound of Music and any of the Lord of the Rings. Watch out though...it's V E R Y S L O W...

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason

Grade: A

Premise: Bridget Jones is back and in a relationship with Mark Darcy...but for how long?

Well, I was discouraged by the so-so reviews but my friends and I went anyways. We really liked it and there were TONS of laugh out loud moments. Not as good as the first one - but still really enjoyable. Colin Firth is, of course, just yummy.

Relative Values

Grade: B
Premise: Hollywood star runs out of money and makes an Earl fall in love with her...Mother of Earl puts a stop to it.

Yet another Colin Firth rental. He plays the cousin of the Earl who stirs up trouble. Cute movie - CF and Julie Andrews are fantastic..William Baldwin and Jeanne Tripplehorn are annoying...Ironic scene where WB's character teaches CF's character how to act... Rent if you are a CF fan.

The Advocate

Grade: C
Premise: A Parisian lawyer circa 1450 moves to the country to represent "the common folk"; ends up representing a pig.

Well, this was a Colin Firth inspired rental. Nice butt shots but the movie was just okay...didn't hate it but don't ever need to see it again.

Hope Springs

Grade: D
Premise: Guy's fiance sends him an invitation to her wedding to another man. He moves from England to America, meets another chick and the fiancee comes back unmarried...Who does he choose?

Another movie rented based on the fact that Colin Firth was in it. He was great. The rest of it blew. With Minnie Driver and Heather Graham both it in ...I should have known. Only suffer through this if you are a CF fan...if not, don't bother.

My Life So Far

Grade: C
Premise: Centers around the growing up of a young boy in Scotland. Based on a True story.

Well I rented this based soley on the fact that Colin Firth is in it...although he plays sort of a shmuck. Movie isn't bad just very slow...so if you like slow, dramatic, english things...it's worth a rent. It's actually light-hearted drama...not worth seeing twice.
