I’m Not There

Rating: D

Premise: A sort of bio-pic about Bob Dylan.

Recommend?: No.  I was intrigued by the multiple people playing Bob Dylan and was wondering how they would pull it off.  Turns out – they aren’t playing Bob Dylan but Bob Dylan’s “roles” in life.  It is totally bizarre and I didn’t like it at all.   I got through an hour before turning it off.

I gave it a “D” instead of an “F” because the actor’s performances were great.

Margot at the Wedding

Rating: D

Story about a woman who goes to her sister's wedding to a man she thinks isn't good enough.  They are all dysfunctional.

Well, the cover says that it is edgy and sharp witted.  I'm not certain who wrote that but I'm wondering if they were reviewing the movie I saw.  This movie was not my thing and it definitely wasn't sharp witted.  More like insanely depressing.  A definite pass.

My Super Ex-Girlfriend

Grade: D

Premise: Guy ends up dating an undercover, insecure super hero.

Recommend?: No. This is pretty terrible.

Scoop

Grade: D

Premise: A ghost reporter speaks to a college journalism student about the scoop of the year

Recommend?: Gave it a D because I got through about an hour of it before falling asleep. Didn't bother to watch the rest. I wouldn't recommend.

Everything is Illuminated

Grade: D

Premise: Jewish Man goes to Russia to find a woman that helped out his grandfather

Recommend?: Yes & No. I could see where some people might like this movie but I kept falling asleep through it. Didn't love it.

Birth

Grade: D

Premise: A young boy tries to convince a widow that he is the reincarnation of her husband.

Recommend: Yes, well sort of. I really liked this movie. The cast was wonderful - notable were Nicole Kidman and Cameron Bright (young boy). CB was able to look like a child and an adult at the same time - wonderfully creepy. The biggest problem with this movie is the pacing. It was 1 hr 40 min and it felt like days. If you can sit through really really REALLY slow movies - then you might enjoy this. That's the reason I gave it a "D+" - there is absolutely NO WAY I could sit through this again.

Ocean's 12

Grade: D

Premise: The gang from Ocean's 11 is back and trying to steal something in Europe. Catherine Zeta Jones is following them.

Recommend?: No, not unless you are supremely bored. The only good character was Matt Damon's Linus - funny moment with him and his mom. It was entertaining for 2.5 hours but I wouldn't say it was any good. I couldn't give it an F because I actually sat through the whole thing. You do get to see shots of George Clooney's Italian Villa on Lake Como...can't say I wouldn't like to live there! Plot is pretty thin.

Lemony Snicket: A Series of Unfortunate Events

Grade: D

Premise: The Baudelaire orphans get passed around from distant relative to distant relative only to have Count Olaf kill off those relatives to gain them and their fortune.

Recommend?: The good of this movie were the actors that played the children. They were QUITE good. The bad of this movie was most everything else. They did a good job of scripting the book for film but it just doesn't play well on film. The first 45 minutes or so are incredibly boring. I'm glad I saw it but I don't need to own it or see it again. Meryl Streep was quite good as well although she was only in it for a short time. I think even kids would be bored. Pass on it.

Carousel (1956)

Grade: D

Premise: Angel gets to go back to earth for one day to make amends with his wife and daughter

Recommend?: No. This was not good at all! IMDb has this as a classic - but I thought it was classically dull. It went on FOREVER and the story wasn't particularly interesting. Most Rodgers & Hammerstein movies are chock full o'songs and this one only had a few and kept repeating two of them over and over. For a better classic musical - watch "Sound of Music"

Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen

Grade: D

Premise: Wacked out girl goes from living in new york city to the suburbs. Fitting in doesn't go well.

What can I say - it's a Lindsey Lohan movie. It didn't suck as bad as expected but it still registered a medium on the suck scale. Pre-teens will love this. Lindsey (tries to) sing in the movie...DH asked if it was supposed to sound bad...uhmmm..no... You will lose some brain cells if you choose to watch this.

Between Strangers

Grade: D

Premise: Follows the lives of three women for a few days. Something monumental happens and they all live happily ever after...we think..

Eh. I was friends with Eduardo Ponti my sophomore year in college so I thought I'd check out his writing and directing debut. Not a terrible job but more like a TV Movie of the Week with a really good cast.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Grade: D

Premise: Guy has a girl erased from his memories after she dumps him.

Well the concept is really interesting but I had to watch this movie in three phases. I had to rewatch part of it - I got so confused. Overall it was iffy. Really glad I didn't watch it in the theater - it was sort of exhausting to watch. Good performances by Kate & Jim. Don't ever need to see it again.

Shaun of the Dead

Grade: D

Premise: BBC comedy about a dude and his loser friends who try to combat zombies.

Well this was marketed as a comedy and yes, there were some really cool comedic moments in it but it ended up being a zombie movie. QUITE GRAPHIC!!! Worth catching on cable.

The Village

Grade: D

Premise: A town in the middle of nowhere has to deal with scary monsters. Oh, and someone gets hurt.

This movie sucked out loud. I had high hopes - but NOPE! Midway through the movie changes main characters and not for the better...the secret twist is revealed way too early and you end up not caring. If you must see this, rent it.

Mystic River

Grade: D
Premise: three childhood friends are reunited after the murder of one of their daughters.

Well, this shouldn't have been as hyped as it was. The ending is a bit disturbing. Overall an okay movie. If you have been wanting to see it - you should...if you are on the fence...don't bother

May 27, 2004

American Wedding

Grade: D
Premise: Further adventures of Jim and Jim's Dad as Jim prepares for his wedding to Band Camp Girl.

Eh, the movie was done on the cheap. Not as good as the first one OR the second one. Boring with the exception of a few funny moments. Only watch if you are a fan of the first two and just MUST SEE this one. If you are on the fence, pass.

May 22, 2004

The Haunted Mansion

Grade: D
Premise: The Evers family goes to Gracie mansion thinking they are going to sell it. Turns out the old ghost that lives there wants to marry Mrs. Evers.

Meh, this movie was really short on funny moments. The best parts are less than a few minutes long and that is with the singing heads in the cemetary. Kids might like this but I was bored to tears...Don't bother. If you have to bother - you will be able to get through it.

Mambo Italiano

Grade: D
Premise: Dude comes out to his Italian Family

Hmmm...people that compared this to My Big Fat Greek Wedding may not have actually seen this movie. Definitely not as funny. Strangely edited. Good performance by Paul Sorvino but the rest is forgettable.

Hope Springs

Grade: D
Premise: Guy's fiance sends him an invitation to her wedding to another man. He moves from England to America, meets another chick and the fiancee comes back unmarried...Who does he choose?

Another movie rented based on the fact that Colin Firth was in it. He was great. The rest of it blew. With Minnie Driver and Heather Graham both it in ...I should have known. Only suffer through this if you are a CF fan...if not, don't bother.
