Stepbrothers

Grade: C

Premise: The parents of two forty-something year old me who still live at home get married. The two boys have to share a room. First they hate each other and then like each other.

Recommend?:Yes/No. It wasn't offensive or anything but this movie never needed to be made. Both Will Ferrell and John C Reilly can do much better than this. These types of movies are getting boring.

The Bucket List

Rating: C

Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman are dying from cancer.  They make a list of things they want to do before they “kick the bucket” and break out of the hospital to start doing them.

Major pet peeve:  Movies that are marketed as comedies but are actually more drama with a few funny/touching scenes.  This is one of those movies.   It wasn’t terrible but I never need to see it again.

Chuck & Buck

Rating: C

Chuck and Buck were friends as kids – friends who may have crossed the line a bit in their relationship. This movie takes place 15 years later when Buck decides that he wants to cross the line again but Chuck wants nothing to do with him.  So Buck stalks Chuck.

The Netflix pouch for this movie describes it as “An offbeat film…”   Um, yeah.  Offbeat is one work to describe it.  It’s not funny, just odd.  I didn’t hate it but I could have lived my life without ever seeing it.  I’d be careful to whom I’d recommend this one.   The sexual tension jumps off the screen at you.

The Golden Compass

Rating: C

This takes place in a world where people's souls live outside their body in the form of an animal.  There is a conspiracy going on to remove the soul from children so they remain innocent.  A child, Lyra, is destined to fix this.

So I think that was the synopsis.  I'm not a huge fan of fantasy because there are usually too many worlds, creatures and plots and this was no different.  I got it towards the end.  It was well done just not my thing.  Although I would watch a sequel if they decide to make it.  I suppose I'm undecided.  For Daniel Craig fans, he's only in it for a few minutes.

Factory Girl

Rating: C

Story of Andy Warhol's muse, Edie Sedgwick.

I mostly liked this movie.  I thought the performances were awesome (Sienna Miller, Guy Pierce) but parts of the movie were a little slow for my taste.  Plus the Hayden Christensen performance was pretty awful.  If you have been interested in seeing it - go ahead.  If you've been on the fence - pass.

Goya's Ghost

Rating: C

During the time of the Spanish Inquisition, Francisco Goya's muse is named a heretic and sent to prison.  When she is released by the French 15 years later, she enlists Goya to help her search for the daughter she gave birth to in prison.

I didn't hate this movie, but I didn't exactly love it.  It seems really long and it is very dark.  Not like a movie set during the Spanish Inquisition should be light hearted but this was really dark.  I thought that Stellan Skarsgard and Javier Bardem did great work but Natalie Portman was a weak link.  It was more "interesting" than anything else.

Superbad

Rating: C

Day in the life type story centered around two best friends that are about to graduate from High School and attend two different universities.   They just want to party and get girlfriends.

I remember this getting a lot of hype and so it went on the NF queue.   I didn't think it was that great.  Some things were hysterical (McLovin) but for the most part - eh.   I think this must be a guys movie.

Evening

Rating: C

A dying mother recounts her secret love story in a series of hallucinations which confuse her two grown up, yet dysfunctional daughters.

What an odd movie.  The parts I liked the best were the flashbacks in which Claire Danes plays the young version of the dying woman.  The real-time sequences, focusing on her daughters various issues, were really lame and depressing.  They should have made a movie of the hallucinations.  With this big-name cast, it should have been a lot better.  The hallucinations parts are worth watching.

Bee Season

Rating: C

Based on some serious family dysfunction - Dad is a professor of jewish mysticism who thinks his young daughter is a sort of prophet, Daughter is a champion speller, Brother decides to become hindu and mom likes to steal things from people's homes. Centers around the family basically falling apart.

Interesting movie - a little slow. The little girl was good but Richard Gere and Juliette Binoche were a little odd. Didn't love it, didn't hate it.

Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny

Grade: C

Premise: JB & KG form a band and go to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to steal the pick of destiny and then have a rock-off with satan.

Recommend?:Yes and No. This is a seriously stupid movie - but I laughed my *ss off. There some really funny moments. Not for kids.

POWERSLIDE!

Last Holiday

Grade: C

Premise: Wallflower department store employee learns she has three weeks to live and decides to go out in style.

Recommend?:Yes, but don't expect too much from it. There are some funny moments but overall it was just something to pass the time. Too bad as I really like Queen Latifah. Not terrible, nothing really special.

The Squid and the Whale

Grade: C

Premise: Novel writing mom & high-brow literary/professor dad get divorced after mom becomes more successful that dad. Kids go nuts.

Recommend?: Not really. I made it through the movie just to see if it got better - it didn't. I didn't like the characters - even the kids characters were different. Not bad acting - just not my type of movie.

Where the Truth Lies

Grade: C

Premise: A young reporter wants to get to the truth behind why a entertainment duo broke up.

Recommend?: Eh, probably not. I know, this is a Colin Firth flick and he did look pretty adorable in it, but it was not a great movie. I really didn't like Alison Lohman in her role - she seemed too young. Kevin Bacon and Colin were good.

Just Like Heaven

Grade:C

Premise:Ghost of Reese Witherspoon invades Mark Ruffalos life

Recommend?:I liked it fine but my husband would have thought it was wretched. Reese is cute as always and the story has a bit of a twist that is revealed nicely. Not one I have to buy - but if you are looking for a cute chick flick - this will do. Jon Heder (Napolean Dynamite) is GREAT!

Must Love Dogs

Grade: C

Premise: Shy divorcee turns to the internet to find a new man. Lucky duck meets a slightly neurotic John Cusak.

Recommend?:Only for chicks...this movie runs a bit slow and the Dianne Lane "poor me" thing got a little old...but I made it through without hating it. You've seen DL and JC in much better films. Go rent "Under a Tuscan Sun" for some better DL. Men don't stand a chance watching this one.

Christmas with the Kranks

Grade: C

Premise: A couple in a very holiday oriented neighborhood decide to skip Christmas and go on a cruise.

Recommend?: Yes and No. This movie is based on the John Grisham novel "Skipping Christmas" and that book is pretty good. The movie mimics the book really well but the acting is incredibly bad. Really feels like they are forcing their lines out. The reason why I might say "yes" to this movie is that the ending is actually really good and touching...you just have to get through the rest of the movie to get there.

Madagascar

Grade: C

Premise: 4 animals from the Central Park Zoo end up in the "wild"

Recommend?: Sure, if you have time to spare. It wasn't that great but I wasn't pissed off that I watched it. The penguins were a disappointment - the best scenes were all in the movie trailer. The one thing that really bugs me about Dreamworks animation is that they put all sorts of modern references into their movies. These movies won't stand the test of time - the funny jokes won't be so funny when no one can identify the reference.

Y Tu Mama Tambien

Grade: C

Premise: Two young guys take a trip to a beach with a beautiful woman who happens to be dying (but they don't know). One of those "we learn about ourselves on this trip" movie

Recommend?: I liked it for the most part but it was seriously all about sex. Not that I'm a prude - but it got old after a while. Nothing outstanding about the acting or direction. Not too much to say about it really. Don't need to see it again.

Room with a View

Grade: C

Premise: Proper British girl falls in love with an improper British boy.

Recommend?: Not really. I was able to watch the entire thing but I was pretty bored by it. I usually love these period pieces but didn't love this one. There's nothing terribly wrong with it - just didn't strike a chord with me.

The Secret of Roan Inish

Grade: C

Premise: A girl goes to live with her grandparents and finds out about her past life on the island of Roan Inish...or something like that

Recommend?: Eh. I just thought it was okay. Younger kids might like it but I got a little bored...cool listening to the Irish accents.
