The Wedding Date

Rating:  B

Premise:  NY Girl has to go to her sister’s wedding in London.  Surprise! Her ex-fiance is the best man.  She hires an “escort” to be her boyfriend for the weekend.  Of course they fall in love.  Of course.

Recommend?:  Yes.  I’m not a Debra Messing fan but I was told this was cute.  I actually bought it before watching and I think it definitely has rewatchability (mostly due to Mr. McDermott).  Definitely a chick flick/rom-com.  Cute and sweet.  Amy Adams bugs in it though – suprising.

New in Town

Grade: B

Premise: Career oriented gal from Miami gets assigned to become a plant manager for a plant in Minnesota. Hates it at first but then finds love in Harry Connick Jr.

Recommend?: Yes, definitely a chick movie. Unfortunately, after only being out two weeks, this was down to one showing in my entire area so I'm thinking it will be out of the theaters soon. I thought this was cute. Totally predictable as most rom-coms are but there are some very funny moments. Started off a little slow but the shenanigans in Minnesota were laugh out loud funny.

Confessions of a Shopaholic

Rating: B

Premise: Rebecca Bloomwood, 16k in debt due to her shopping habit, gets a job at a Savings magazine. Then she falls in love with the cute editor.

I think they did a decent job of adapting the book into this movie. The books are much better but this was a fun chick movie. Isla Fischer is adorable and is a good Rebecca. Hugh Dancy was good but a little miscast as Luke Brandon…a Clive Owen type would have been better. Go see a matinee or rent when it comes out.

Bride Wars

Grade: B

Premise: Two BFFs who have dreamed of being June brides at the Plaza accidentally have their weddings scheduled on the same day. Bridezilla chaos ensues.

Recommend?: Yes, for girls only. This is such a serious chick movie I think that it has testosterone repellent oozing out of the screen. You can see where the storylines are going with this one a mile away but it is still worth a watch. Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson are a scream with the "wars" part of bride wars. Glad to see Steve Howey from "Reba" in a movie.

Baby Mama

Rating:  C+

A 37 year old career woman decides that her bio clock is ticking and the alarm is about to go off.  Having been told that her uterus is not hospitable she decides to engage a surrogate.  The experience changes them all.

Well, I didn’t love this movie but there were a few good parts in it.  It all ends up so perfect and predictable and you can guess the ending from a mile away.  Definitely a renter.  Steve Martin is pretty damn funny though.

P.S. I Love You

Rating: B+

Premise:  A young widow gets letters from her dead husband (obviously planned out before he died) in order to help her move on from his death.

Recommend:  Yes!  I had really low expectations for this movie – seemed like a standard rom-com.  I ended up loving it.  I cried through most of it actually – don’t watch if you’ve just lost/broken up with your love.  You will be a disaster.  Gerard Butler is a CUTIE!

Sex and the City (2008)

Rating: A

Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte & Miranda are back!   We pick up four years after the end of the series and find out what they've been up to.   Big is in it too... *sigh*

Loved it!  It wasn't a perfect movie by any means but it was a great catch up for any fan of the show.  There were lots of laugh out loud moments.  They did a great job of moving the characters forward while retaining what we love about each character.  Now I want to watch all the seasons again.  Don't know if you would like it if you didn't watch the series.

Becoming Jane

Rating: B+

This movie tells the story of Jane Austen, her loves, her family and how she became one of the most celebrated writers ever.

I liked this movie a lot.  I thought that Anne Hathaway did a good job as Jane.  The supporting cast was wonderful.  It is a little slow but the quick and smart dialog of Jane Austen makes up for it.  Definitely a renter unless, like me, you must own every movie that refers to Austen.   James McAvoy is awesome - now I need to go see Atonement

The Jane Austen Book Club

Rating: A-

Five women and a guy with really bad relationship issues create a book club where they meet to discuss only Jane Austen books.  The relationship issues go away magically after the men become "Austenized".

I haven't read the book this is based off of but I have read most of the Jane Austen books.  (All but Northhanger Abbey - just haven't gotten around to it).  I thought it was entertaining and a definite chick movie.  The guy in the book club, Grigg, is adorable.

Miss Potter

Rating: A-

This is a biography of Beatrix Potter as a woman about to publish her Peter Rabbit books and of the struggles she has being a famous woman in strict society England.  This is very character driven and "talky".  I thought it was wonderful - especially Ewan McGregor and Emily Watson.  Renee Zellweger was good - but her face seemed really puffy and red.  I know that that shouldn't make a difference but it was distracting.

The Nanny Diaries

Rating: B-

Story of a college graduate who is looking to find herself and finds herself a nanny for a wealthy family on the Upper East Side.

I loved this book but the movie was not exceptional.  It wasn't terrible but it was really almost a line-by-line of the movie so it got a bit boring.  Scarlett Johansson was an interesting choice for the roll of the nanny - I would have gone with someone with a bit more personality as the character felt a little flat.  Laura Linney was great.  Bob Giamatti was another interesting choice.   I bought it but I probably won't watch it often.

Catch and Release

Grade:  B-

Premise:  A woman's fiancee dies the week before their wedding - then she falls in love with his friend.

Recommend? Yes/No.  Definitely a chick flick and not a strong one at that.  Nothing really terrible about it but nothing special either.  Jennifer Garner was pretty cute but I was most surprised to see Mr. Bullock of Deadwood, Timothy Olyphant as the male lead.   Watch it if you want to kill time.  Not a must own.

Music & Lyrics

Grade: B-

Premise: Has been pop star has to write a song for a teenage pop queen and ends up having his plant lady write his lyrics. and then they fall in love.

Recommend?: Sure, if you are a girl and have a few hours to spare. It is really not a great movie - I thought it was still in the theaters and it had just come out on DVD. There are some cute moments. Hugh Grant was so-so, Drew Barrymore was cute but had some fugly hair styles.

In Her Shoes

Grade: B-

Premise: Based on the novel by Jennifer Weiner, Toni Collette & Cameron Diaz play sisters with personalities that are polar opposites. After the responsible sister has a disagreement with the hard-partying sister, the two drift apart only to be brought to a reconciliation by a long-lost grandmother, Shirley MacLaine.

Recommend?:Sure, but this is strictly a chick movie. Cameron's character can get a little annoying but overall it isn't bad.

The Lake House

Grade: B

Premise: Guy and Girl develop a relationship through a mailbox.

Recommend?: Yes. I thought this would suck but I rented it because DH insisted on seeing it. I ended up enjoying it. It isn't fantastic by any means but enjoyable to sit through nonetheless. DH still hasn't seen it, by the way.

The Family Stone

Grade: B-/C+

Premise: Uptight girl goes to her fiancee's parent's house for Christmas - fiancee's family are liberal and funky. Love Connections happen

Recommend?:Meh. SJP was a little, ok a LOT annoying, but the movie had its good moments. A great brother chasing other brother around the house scene. It isn't great but it is get-throughable.

The Devil Wears Prada

Grade: A

Premise: A fashionless wannabe reporter lands a job as the assistant to the boss from hell editor of "the" fashion magazine.

Recommend?: Yes, this is a funny movie. Meryl Streep plays Miranda FANTASTIC. I always like Anne Hathaway. A little different story than the book with regards to the second love interest and I like the book version better - but still - really good.

Just Like Heaven

Grade:C

Premise:Ghost of Reese Witherspoon invades Mark Ruffalos life

Recommend?:I liked it fine but my husband would have thought it was wretched. Reese is cute as always and the story has a bit of a twist that is revealed nicely. Not one I have to buy - but if you are looking for a cute chick flick - this will do. Jon Heder (Napolean Dynamite) is GREAT!

Must Love Dogs

Grade: C

Premise: Shy divorcee turns to the internet to find a new man. Lucky duck meets a slightly neurotic John Cusak.

Recommend?:Only for chicks...this movie runs a bit slow and the Dianne Lane "poor me" thing got a little old...but I made it through without hating it. You've seen DL and JC in much better films. Go rent "Under a Tuscan Sun" for some better DL. Men don't stand a chance watching this one.

Monster-in-law

Grade: B

Premise: Celebrity that just lost her job is about to lose her son to Jennifer Lopez...tries everything in her power to stop the wedding...Wanda Sykes helps her out.

Recommend?: Well, due to my political beliefs, I didn't want to like this. I must say that this is definitely Jane Fonda's movie and she was great in it. Jennifer Lopez and Michael Vartan were just sidekicks in this - they weren't terrible but not as good as Ms. Fonda. Wanda Sykes was great. The movie was cute but Jane Fonda was great.
