Phantom of the Opera (2004)

Grade: C

Premise: Based on the musical "The Phantom of the Opera", by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber.

This movie went from wretched to heartwrenching. If you REALLY want to see it - go and you probably won't be disappointed. For those of you who have seen the musical - it will be a total disappointment. Gerard Butler sings for crap but plays the role of the Phantom quite well. Emmy Rossum was delightful and had a very strong voice. The guy who plays Raoul was not that great and just had a so so voice. The "Point of No Return" part of the movie was fantastic. If this movie had a different director I'm guessing that most of the cast would have gotten Oscar nods and the movie would have been up for Best Movie...they blew it big time. I contemplated falling asleep through part of it.

If you are a serious movie critic you will be entertained by the continuity problems (especially with wardrobe) and the bad editing of the singing dubs. They really pissed me off when they started to SPEAK some of the lyrics to the songs - didn't work well at ALL!

As you can tell I didn't like this movie - but because the few parts that were good were SO GOOD I had to give it a C...
